Kenya Library Association (KLA) is a professional association re.gistered in 1973 after the dissolution of the East African Library Association (EALA). The Association traces her origins from the EALA which was established in 1956 and whose membership included Uganda and Tanganyika (now Tanzania), with headquarters in Nairobi. Thus, KLA is one of the oldest professional associations in Africa.
KLA pays tribute to the International Network for Scientific Publications (INASP ) whose support has facilitated the development of this website.
To provide a forum for communication and cooperation between information professionals and institutional members, at local, national, regional and international level
Lobby with the government to formulate and enact policies that will promote access to information
Ensure that all levels of the society have access to information for individual growth and national development.
Provide information to support government priority initiatives in poverty eradication, education, HIV/AIDS, ICT, etc
Promote development and sustenance of a reading culture and the creation of a knowledge society, that would enhance socio-economic development in Kenya
Liaise with key stakeholders in the development of a school library network in Kenya
Promote professional competencies for improved socio-economic development of the nation
Encourage and support efforts in integration of information and communications technology (ICT) in libraries, and the national information infrastructure
Facilitate the development of professional competencies for a market economy in Kenya
Kenya Library Association strives to become a leading professional body for librarians, information specialists, and knowledge managers in Eastern Africa.
Our Mission is:
To organize, unite and represent professionals concerned with information work in Kenya in accordance with international professional standards
To promote growth, development and professional integrity of its members
Set, maintain, monitor and promote standards of excellence in the creation, management and exploitation of information and knowledge resources
To promote creation of knowledge and information societies through advocacy
According to the KLA constitution: Chapters shall be formed within the Association in the manner prescribed in the By-laws to represent each of the principal professions concerned with the information sciences, such Chapters being composed of the members of the Association of each individual profession. The chapters allowed by the current constitution are as follows:
The Chapter of Librarians
The Chapter of Archivists
The Chapter of Information Technologist
The Chapter of Documentalists
Out of these, the Documentalist chapter has been formed and is active.
